This is towards the middle of the film after Bickle, now gun obsessed, has just completed target practice with his four new pistols - after which he goes to the cinema alone and begins to make imaginary targets of the ‘actors’ in the film ... sharing with us that ‘the idea had been growing in my brain for some time’ - revealing his plan to assassinate Senator Palantine.
